Chapel of the Icon “Saviour of the Drowning”, Kyiv

The icon of the Mother of God “Saviour of the Drowning” is a Ukrainian treasure from the Chernihiv region. A village on the Desna river had a dangerous whirlpool where people drowned and boats sank. According to tradition, once fishermen found the icon and built a church, the disasters stopped.

The chapel dedicated to the icon in Bortnychi, Kyiv, was built in the early 21st century by the Annunciation Monastery. Icons of Sts Olga and Volodymyr adorn the main façade, and the dome is gilded with gold leaf. We painted the interior: together with the clients we developed each scene, chose the gilding materials and painted the icons.
