Iconostases: selected works

The iconostasis is the centrepiece of a church interior: a wall of icons that represents the world of the saints. Work on an iconostasis begins with studying the architecture, history and style of the church, and deciding in advance which icons it will hold.

An iconostasis is usually made when a church is built or restored, and it is most cost-effective to commission it together with the murals. The classic scheme has five tiers: the Forefathers tier with the Holy Trinity at the top, then the Prophets, Feasts and Deesis tiers, and at the bottom the Local tier with the Royal Doors and the Last Supper above them.
